How to pick a container in four steps
1. Start with the grade. Will the box live out front, get a door cut into it, or end up inside a finished build? Choose new (one-trip). Behind the shop holding parts? Choose used — cheapest square footage you can buy. Cold chain, catering, or pharma? Go straight to refrigerated.
2. Then size to the site. A 20ft tucks into a residential driveway and stores roughly a one-car garage. A 40ft doubles the floor area for about 30–40% more dollars — the best price per square foot on the market when the approach can accept a 100-foot run-up. Add a high-cube only when ceiling height or pallet stacking actually demands the extra foot.
3. Pre-clear the approach. Tilt-beds need a straight, obstruction-free run of roughly 60 feet for a 20ft and 100 feet for a 40ft. If the path is borderline, text site photos to sales@axisstoragesolutionsllc.shop before booking — a two-minute photo review prevents most failed deliveries.

Built in Asia, loaded for a single Pacific run, pulled from rotation on arrival. Factory paint, untouched plywood floor, a full 10–15 years of service life ahead. The pick whenever the unit will be visible, modified, or built into something.

- What does a shipping container actually cost in 2026?
- Pricing tracks condition and size, not marketing. A used 20ft cargo-worthy unit sits in the $1,800–$3,200 band, a used 40ft standard runs $2,200–$4,000, and a 40ft high-cube adds a few hundred on top. One-trip (functionally new) inventory carries a 50–80% premium because the steel is fresh and the paint is untouched. Every figure published on this site is delivered — free contiguous-US freight is already inside the number, listed at $0.00 on the invoice. No fuel adders. No depot-pull surcharge tacked on after you sign.
- 40ft standard versus 40ft high-cube — which one do I actually need?
- Same external footprint, same payload rating, same door dimensions. The only difference is height: a high-cube is 9'6" tall outside (8'10" of interior headroom) versus 8'6" on a standard (7'10" inside). That extra foot decides four use cases — ducted HVAC, tall pallet racking, mezzanine builds, and any habitable conversion. For pure ground-storage of boxes, bins, or equipment under 7 feet, the standard is the cheaper, equally capable answer.
- Is the free delivery really free, or is there a catch?
- It is the price you see, full stop. Axis Storage Solutions absorbs the depot-to-door freight on every order shipped to one of the 48 contiguous states and lists it as a $0.00 line item on the order confirmation so there is paper-trail proof. Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and other US territories require port-of-entry coordination and are quoted individually — email sales@axisstoragesolutionsllc.shop with your ZIP for one of those.
- One-trip vs cargo-worthy used — which grade should I buy?
- One-trip units crossed the Pacific exactly once, then got pulled from the rotation and sold. They look new, smell new, and have 10–15 years of remaining service life. Cargo-worthy (CWO) used units have been in ocean rotation for 10–15 years, are independently surveyed wind- and water-tight, and carry the cosmetic dents and paint wear you would expect. CWO is the right pick when the container is going behind the shop and storing parts. One-trip is the right pick when the container is going out front, getting a window cut into it, or becoming part of a finished build.
- How much room do I need at the drop site?
- Plan the approach before you plan the placement. A tilt-bed needs a straight, level run-up of roughly 60 feet for a 20ft unit and 100 feet for a 40ft, plus 15 feet of overhead clearance and at least 14 feet of width. Surface matters more than people expect — compacted gravel, asphalt, or concrete carries the truck; soft soil and wet clay do not. - Do I need a permit before the container shows up?
- Usually no for rural lots, jobsites, and industrial parcels storing equipment temporarily. Usually yes if the container is going to live there long-term, get modified, be visible from the street in an HOA, or be used as habitable space. Permitting is regulated by your municipality, not Axis — call your local planning or zoning office before delivery day. We cannot file permits on a buyer's behalf, but we will hold dispatch on request while you finish the paperwork.
- How long do these things actually last?
- Corten steel containers are engineered for 25 years of ocean abuse, so a unit sitting on dry blocks in a dry climate routinely makes it past 25. Coastal and humid environments shave that window to 15–20 before serious rust work is warranted. The two maintenance items that decide lifespan are simple: keep the bottom rails off the dirt with railroad ties or concrete piers, and inspect the roof for standing water every spring.
- Can the container be modified — doors, windows, electrical, climate control?
- Yes. Axis routes modifications through US-based fab shops we have a working relationship with: roll-up doors, personnel doors, windows, vents, spray-foam insulation, electrical packages, mini-split HVAC, plumbing rough-in, and full architectural fit-outs. - Which payment methods are accepted?
- Domestic bank wire and ACH only — on every order size. Credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, Zelle, crypto, and third-party financing are intentionally off the table because each one adds 2–4% in processing that ends up on the buyer's invoice. Wires clear in one business day, ACH in one to three. Dispatch is booked within 24 hours of cleared funds.
- What happens if the unit shows up and I am not happy with it?
- Inspect at delivery. Note anything you do not like on the bill of lading before signing — that is the moment damage-on-arrival claims are filed and refunded in full. Outside of obvious damage, every order carries a 30-day inspection-based return window from the date of delivery acceptance, with a 15% restocking fee and return freight on the buyer.
