How to choose a shipping container
Pick the size first. 20ft fits a standard driveway and stores roughly the contents of a one-car garage. 40ft doubles the floor space for about 30–40% more money — usually the right call if your site allows a 100-foot delivery approach. 40ft high-cube adds 12 inches of interior height and is preferred for habitable builds, lofted storage, and tall equipment.
Then pick the condition. One-trip (new) units cost the most but look factory-fresh and last the longest — choose them for visible installations or anything you'll modify. Cargo-worthy and wind-and-watertight used units are the best value when looks matter less than function. Refurbished sits in the middle: used steel, restored finish, custom color.
Confirm the site. A tilt-bed truck needs a straight, level approach roughly 60 feet long for a 20ft unit and 100 feet for a 40ft. Soft soil, low overhead obstructions, and tight turning radii are the most common reasons a delivery fails — send photos to sales@axisconex.com before ordering if you're unsure.
Then lock the quote. Every Axis price already includes free delivery anywhere in the contiguous United States. No freight surcharges, no fuel adjustments, no surprise depot-pull fees.

Shipping container sizes & dimensions
ISO shipping containers come in four standard sizes. Match the size to your site access first — a 40ft unit needs nearly twice the delivery clearance of a 20ft.

Condition grades explained
One-Trip (New)
Built overseas, loaded once for a single transpacific voyage, then sold. Factory paint, untouched interior, full 10–15 years of life remaining. The right call for container homes, visible installs, and anything you'll modify.
Shop one-trip containers ›Cargo Worthy (CWO)
Certified for international ocean shipping by an independent surveyor. Sound roof and floor, working door gaskets, no major rust. Cosmetic wear (dings, repaint patches, original cargo livery) is expected and priced in.
Shop cargo-worthy used ›Wind & Water Tight (WWT)
Sealed against weather but not certified for ocean shipping. Same structural soundness, more cosmetic wear. Best value per square foot for ground-storage use cases where appearance doesn't matter.
Browse value-tier used ›Refurbished
Used steel stripped, treated, repainted any RAL color, fitted with new gaskets and lock rods. Storefront-grade looks at a fraction of one-trip pricing. Photo-documented restoration with every unit.
Shop refurbished ›Refrigerated (Reefer)
Active refrigeration machinery, operating −20°F to +70°F. Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) tested before dispatch with documented results. 6-month warranty on the cooling system.
Shop refrigerated ›Modified / Custom
Container offices, retail pop-ups, workshops, container homes, and architectural builds. US-based fabrication shops handle door cuts, windows, electrical, insulation, and HVAC with stage-by-stage photo proof.
Explore custom builds ›What drives shipping container pricing
- ›Depot proximity. Containers shipped from the nearest depot to your address cost less than ones trucked across multiple states. Axis quotes from the closest depot with stock.
- ›Condition. One-trip costs 50–80% more than cargo-worthy used for the same size. Refurbished sits in the middle.
- ›Size. A 40ft is usually only 30–40% more than a 20ft despite doubling the floor area — the best dollar-per-square-foot deal on the market.
- ›Season & supply. Spring and early summer demand pushes prices 5–15% higher. Late fall is the buyer's market.
- ›Modifications. Each door cut, window, vent, or electrical run is fabricated to spec — quoted separately and never bundled into a misleading "from" price.
- ›Delivery. Every Axis quote includes free contiguous-US delivery as a $0.00 line item. No fuel adjustments, no depot-pull fees.

- 100ft for 40ft units
- Width & height
- 14ft wide path
- 15ft overhead clearance

Pre-delivery inspection checklist
Every Axis unit is photographed and graded against the depot inspection sheet that ships with your bill of sale. Use this 8-point list when the container arrives — anything that fails is a damage-on-arrival claim.

No standing water, no pinhole rust, no dents that pool. Climb up if safely possible.
- Check 02Floor
Marine plywood intact, no soft spots, no rot. Sweep before signing.
- Check 03Door gaskets
Continuous rubber seal all around both doors. Light should not pass through.
- Check 04Lock rods & cams
Four lock rods swing freely and cams seat. Padlock boxes intact.
- Check 05Door swing
Doors open to 270° and stay open. Hinges greased, no binding.
- Check 06Side vents
Two vents per side, screens unobstructed, no gnaw damage.
- Check 07Undercarriage
Cross-members straight, forklift pockets clear, no major rust-through.
- Check 08CSC plate
Consolidated Safety Convention plate present and legible. Confirms hull traceability.
Shipping container questions, answered.
Real questions from real buyers — pricing, delivery clearance, permits, condition grades, payment, and returns. Still stuck? Call the Phoenix depot at 800.756.0045.
- How much does a shipping container cost?
- Used 20ft cargo-worthy units typically run $1,800–$3,200, used 40ft standard units $2,200–$4,000, and 40ft high-cube units a few hundred more. One-trip (new) containers are roughly 50–80% higher. Every Axis price already includes free delivery anywhere in the contiguous United States — no fuel adjustments or surprise depot fees at checkout.
- What's the difference between a 40ft standard and a 40ft high-cube?
- Same 40-foot footprint and same payload. A high-cube is 9'6" tall externally (8'10" interior) versus a standard 8'6" (7'10" interior) — an extra foot of headroom. High-cubes are the default choice for container homes, mounted HVAC, lofted storage, and tall pallet stacking.
- Do you deliver nationwide and is delivery really free?
- Yes. Axis delivers to every address in the 48 contiguous states and free delivery is built into the quoted price as a $0.00 line item. Hawaii, Alaska, and US territories are quoted separately on request.
- What's the difference between one-trip and used (cargo-worthy)?
- One-trip units have made a single transpacific voyage — factory paint, clean interior, 10–15 years of usable life remaining. Cargo-worthy (CWO) used units are 10–15 years old, certified wind- and water-tight with a sound roof, floor, and door seals; cosmetic wear is expected. Used is the best value per square foot; one-trip is best for visible or modified builds.
- How much space do I need for delivery?
- A tilt-bed truck needs a straight, level approach roughly 60 feet long for a 20ft container and 100 feet for a 40ft. Plan on 15 feet of overhead clearance, a 14-foot-wide path, and firm ground (compact gravel, asphalt, or concrete). Send site photos to sales@axisconex.com if you're unsure — failed deliveries are usually preventable.
- Do I need a permit to put a shipping container on my property?
- Most rural and industrial parcels don't require one for temporary storage. Many municipalities require a zoning or building permit if the container will stay long-term, be modified, or be used as a habitable structure. Check with your local zoning department before delivery — Axis cannot pull permits on the buyer's behalf.
- How long do shipping containers last?
- Built from corten weathering steel for 25-year ocean service, a container sitting on dry blocks in a dry climate can last 25+ years. In humid or coastal climates, expect 15–20 years before significant rust repair. Keep the unit off the ground on railroad ties or concrete piers and inspect the roof annually.
- Can the container be modified — doors, windows, electrical, HVAC?
- Yes. Axis works with US-based fabrication shops for door cuts, roll-up doors, windows, vents, insulation, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and full architectural fit-outs. Every modification is photo-documented at each stage. Use the Custom Modifications page or request a custom quote.
- What payment methods do you accept?
- Bank wire and ACH for all order sizes. We do not accept credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, Zelle, cryptocurrency, or third-party financing — it keeps pricing depot-anchored and free of processing surcharges. Funds clear in 1–3 business days and dispatch is scheduled within 24 hours of clearance.
- What's your return policy?
- 30-day inspection-based return window from delivery acceptance. A 15% restocking fee applies and the buyer is responsible for return freight. Damage-on-arrival claims documented at delivery are refunded in full. Full terms on the Return Policy page.
